MN Original | Mosaic artist Michael Sweere

A former art director, Michael Sweere created his first mosaics out of discarded product packaging from his various advertising accounts. After learning the basics of the medium, he started incorporating more traditional mosaic materials like tile and tin.

Sweere scours thrift stores and rummage sales to find materials for his work, which includes imagery of nature, animals and landscapes.

MN Original | The Gallery at Children’s Hospital

Art plays a crucial role in the healing process for patients and families at the Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. Whether it’s the one-on-one art therapy or the infusion of kid-friendly art installations throughout the buildings, art helps to make the hospital more familiar and friendly for all who walk through the doors. Through its Arts & Healing program, Children’s Hospital will end up with more than 700 pieces of commissioned art.

The Storyteller

Forecast Public Art | Carl W. Kroening Interpretative Center

Michael Sweere created a recycled-object mosaic mural depicting the natural life of the Upper Mississippi  River. Sweere worked with the Carl W. Kroening Interpretive Center in the North Mississippi Regional Park. The mural has become a “centerpiece” within the Interpretive Center for fun, kid-friendly activities. The installation combines folk art whimsy and fine art accuracy to amuse viewers as they learn about the living creatures of the Upper-Mississippi ecosystem.
